Minister: Data retention laws to help Russian industry develop

VLADIVOSTOK, Sep 5 (PRIME) -- Implementation of Russia’s controversial package of anti-terrorism laws, obliging telecom and Internet operators to store metadata, content of users’ talks and correspondence, will give an additional impetus for development of the domestic industry, Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said on September 3.

“I positively see (the laws), because we will have a stimulus to develop our industries when we use Russian software products and radio electronic equipment,” Manturov said.

The ministry earlier suggested putting the National Center of Informatization, a unit of state industrial giant Rostec, in charge of fulfillment of the data retention laws.

Operators would pay the center for the services 3–4 billion rubles per year, as the ministry calculated. The government will not spend budget money on the initiatives.
